Project Overview
Development of overseas research bases
We will establish overseas research bases in 11 countries in Asia, Africa, and South America to conduct basic research on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, focusing on infectious diseases that are prevalent or expected to become prevalent in infectious disease endemic areas. Taking advantage of an unprecedented and original research scheme in which researchers affiliated with Japanese universities and other institutions are stationed on-site and conduct collaborative research in cooperation with local universities and research institutes with which we have built relationships of trust over many years, we will promote research that utilizes patient samples, clinical information, and data from infectious disease endemic areas that cannot be obtained domestically.

Network core location
It was established in 2023 with the aim of establishing a system that contributes to strengthening Japan’s infectious disease response capabilities by strengthening the network of overseas research bases established in infectious disease endemic areas while also building a system of close collaboration and cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and related organizations, etc. Its mission is also to efficiently utilize the research resources of overseas research bases and maximize their research capabilities by supporting the promotion of joint research targeting wide areas across multiple overseas research bases, supporting the promotion of collaboration with external research institutes and companies involved in the development of vaccines and therapeutic drugs, and strengthening the research infrastructure that supports these.
