Infectious disease control research and human resource development utilizing the Brazilian base

Brazil base

The Brazil base is an overseas research base established in January 2024, and is based at the Keizo Asami Institute (iLIKA) of the Federal University of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. The site has BSL2 and BSL-3 laboratories and is equipped with equipment capable of carrying out pathogen isolation, drug discovery research, and various genetic analyses including next-generation sequencer analysis.

Target infectious diseases include dengue fever, chikungunya fever, Zika fever, influenza, COVID-19, yellow fever, West Nile fever, Oropouche fever, South American hemorrhagic fever, malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, and leptospirosis, and there are also plans to store pathogens isolated locally.

Currently, we are conducting research on emerging viral infectious diseases, parasitic diseases such as Chagas disease, genomic and epidemiological research on pathogens, pathological research to clarify the pathological mechanisms of infectious diseases prevalent in Latin America, and arboviruses.

Major papers and achievements

A word from the research director

The Nagasaki University Brazil Project Base is a new base established in January 2024 and is currently in the launch phase. Currently, two assistant professors and one administrative staff member are stationed on-site, and researchers from Nagasaki University visit regularly to conduct research focusing on infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases specific to South America. We also plan to actively engage in collaborative research with Japanese researchers using the base.
