Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO Ghana base

Basic research into infectious diseases and human resource development using the Ghana base

Ghana base

Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO (formerly Tokyo Medical and Dental University) has been conducting joint research on infectious diseases and nurturing young researchers with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (Noguchi Institute) at the University of Ghana for 20 years. Our university is the overseas partner institution with the longest history of cooperation with the institute, and has established an original scheme to conduct joint research with local researchers based on a strong relationship of trust. Currently, due to the constraints of the Noguchi Institute’s research management system, we are unable to set up our own laboratory and experimental equipment, but we will install and maintain the research equipment necessary for the research fields of Noguchi Institute’s collaborators, and will be able to use the laboratories and equipment of the collaborators.

We are currently conducting research on mosquito-borne viral infections (dengue virus, yellow fever virus, etc.), rotavirus infection, falciparum malaria, and bacterial infections (Buruli ulcer, drug-resistant bacteria, etc.).

Major papers and achievements

A word from the Director

Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO (formerly Tokyo Medical and Dental University) has been in a cooperative relationship with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, University of Ghana for 20 years. There are counterparts at the University of Ghana and the Noguchi Institute who obtained their degrees in Japan, and they continue to conduct research smoothly based on their mutual trust. Although Ghana is far from Japan, we would appreciate it if as many researchers as possible would utilize our Ghana base to advance their research. Tokyo Medical and Dental University will merge with the Tokyo Institute of Technology on October 1, 2024, to become the new Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO.
